Episode Seventeen: 1997 and 1974

A generation apart, two teenage girls manage at Auchengate as best they can without their mothers

I adore Lindsay's energy, her honesty, and the way she captures the depth of some of the darkest moments in life and writes about it with such beauty. A tonic for today.

Hi friends,

If you’re new here (hi!) welcome. Each Wednesday, I share a new episode of my memoir – Held in Mind – for my Membership. Here’s a link to take you to Episode One (which is a free listen)…

Episode Seventeen: 1997 and 1974

October 1997

Lindsay is 14. Her mother is an in-patient at Ailsa – the local psychiatric hospital – and she’s living at Auchengate with her brother and grandfather, Tom. But with her friends at school, she’s not talking about any of that. She’s got other things going on, not least her compulsion to beat her best friend, Nicole, in all their shared subjects.

March 1974

MaryEllen is 15. Her mother is an in-patient at Ailsa – the local psychiatric hospital – and she’s living at Auchengate with her brothers and father, Tom. School, though, offers her no refuge.
