It's mid-March 1946 and 2020. Helen and Tom are once again separated after a brief yet tumultuous weekend, and forces beyond Lindsay's control threaten to remove her access to therapy

Tom assures Helen that she has no need to worry about what sort of wife and mother she’ll become.

Helen describes her distress at their ongoing separation and shares worries about how her mother will receive the news of her conversion to Catholicism and their upcoming wedding.

“You’ll notice, I hope, that I’ve worked to change my mood for you. Yet inside, I feel worse than ever… I stop whatever I’m doing, put my hands to my face and say ‘Oh Tom.’
