There’s a walk I take on Friday evenings when my younger daughter is at gymnastics. I drop her off at her class just before the hour and nip three minutes back in the direction of home. I swing off the main road, under the railway arch and onto the single-track road in a way that’s pure muscle memory. I don’t have to think about it, it’s just something I do. I know these roads so well. Know where I’m not supposed to leave the car too, but each week I cross my fingers no one will come out of the bowling club and tell me off. So far, I’ve been lucky.
