oh love I'd already loved and read it! I loved this bit in particular "It is work. And good work takes time to create. Thinking time, drafting time, editing time, polishing time, promoting time, promoting time, promoting time… (I’ll stop now)" x
Hi, Lindsay, thank you for such a strong and positive essay. I'm subscribing for free for the time being. This time of year is financially tough with the holidays and all the wrong bills coming due, but I hope to upgrade next year ... which isn't that far away :-)
I appreciate your comment about it being a race to the bottom to give ourselves away for free. I understand that, and it's obvious you've put a lot of work into your newsletter, making it visually attractive as well as thoughtfully written. I look forward to reading more!
Wow I love the tone and feel of this. I feel like culture writers have a direct line to community many of us writing in other niches do not. My only struggle is to define what your Newsletter is about? Is there a niche within a niche that I should know about or is it purely about musings.
Loved this Lindsay! Talking about the value of writing and seeing it as work is so important. It's something I've felt so strongly internally for a long time, but have found it difficult to articulate (justify?) in public. Thank you so much for the shout out too 😊 it's so good to find other writers in the Scottish corner of Substack!
You're so welcome! Yes, I asked myself a lot of questions before turning on paid and felt that writing this newsletter at least helped me wok through my motivation! We'll no doubt be keeping that particular conversation going, though! Have a lovely Monday!
Best of luck with going paid, Lindsay! I'd love to hear how it goes for you - I hope to get my head around it at some point too.
I totally understand that this platform, and how we're using it, seems to be giving energy at the moment, rather than taking away, and I hope it continues!
I completely see the parallels between this and any other community.
I’ll have to ask my aunt because she has all that information. All I know is they came sometime in the early 20th century and they were part of clan Ross.
Congrats on moving to paid! My growth is still slow, but I'm excited that I finally have a plan and it sounds like you do too 😊 I'm going to need some time this summer to decide which subscriptions I need to move up to paid, but I'm excited to see where your project goes!
Thanks Sarah! Yes, the paid juggle is real! I have reminders in my calendar when a month of paid with someone is coming up so that I can mindfully opt to continue if I've been enjoying it or swap it out for someone I've been following and enjoying for free.
This is great, Lindsay! Looking forward to seeing how your community continues to build here - congratulations on turning on paid too, so exciting. 👏🏻✨ Thanks so much for the lovely mention, really glad you're enjoying Haver and Sparrow. ❤️ I'm writing about community this week too (going out later today) so it's great to see we've got similar mindsets about creating a safe, encouraging space for writing and conversation. 🥰💫
Thanks Charlene! A total pleasure to mention your newsletter in mine, too. I'm so interested to discover the voices writing from Scotland - we're a small but mighty Substack subset! Looking forward to reading your post later today. Enjoy your Sunday!

Welcome!
Related to so much of this. The second book especially. I keep thinking *how the hell did I do this last time* 😬😬
Oh completely! It's quite a thing, isn't it? We just have to just keep going...

Yes! We are small but mighty, us Scottish Substackers! Thanks for your comments, Rebecca. Really enjoying your newsletters too!

And thank you for mentioning me :)
Ah I love the joy in this announcement! Congratulations x
Thanks Laura! The adventure continues!
Yes! New decade, new community and more writing. Excellent.
Indeed! Thanks Michelle!

Ps: followed you on instagram!
Scotland! My family immigrated from Scotland in early 20ty century, The Taggarts, part of Clan Ross 🏴
Wow! Would love to know what part of the country they were from?
