Hi friends,

I’ve been up on Scotland’s far north-east coast for work this week, nursing a cold that I’m blaming on last Sunday’s Avanti West Coast service from Crewe to Glasgow. Still, there’s something about being in the car alone that’s for savouring, virus or no virus. Dan Richards’ brilliant new book, Overnight: Journeys, Conversations and Stories After Dark kept me company for long stretches which felt apt given he travelled the length and breadth of this country (as well as further afield) in the researching and writing of it.

I found it deeply affecting listening; Dan journeying alongside those who labour in darkness so that we might wake and find the day ready for us. It’s more than a chronicle of what happens while the majority of us sleep on, though. At its core, it’s a book about benevolence, about service and about love and you should read it.

My brilliant Arvon mentor, Cal Flyn (pictured above in convo with Dan last Thursday in my local, Mount Florida Books): “In Overnight, Dan Richards introduces us to the shadowy, starlit world of postal workers, night nurses, twenty-four-hour industry, late night radio, search and rescue.
