Loved this so much and can really relate. My family are half from the east coast and half from the west, and I find myself slipping into a more Ayrshire-slanted accent whenever I’m over that side. Also, as a Dundonian who doesn’t have much of a Dundonian accent I often felt like I stuck out at school - I was accused of sounding “posh” 😂 I really cherish the (limited) Scots I know and I’m fascinated by those huge differences that can be found in towns a stone’s throw apart, like you say. This is such a difficult and complex topic to get accross but explain it perfectly and so honestly. I think it's something so many Scottish people can resonate with, being too Scottish sounding in some spheres, and not Scottish enough in others!
I love this aspect of ageing - of learning to find pride in the old parts of ourselves we'd rejected. Such an interesting intersection of class, culture, rural vs city living in all these complexities. Loved reading this and learning more about the particular expression of it all in Scotland xx
